SSI markets, designs, sells and manufactures glulams, I-joist, and open web trusses for roof and floor systems. Further, SSI can supply a variety of other engineered wood products and services to provide the most comprehensive system solution available
In 2007, SSI celebrated 60 years of continuous business in the manufacturing of EWP. This is also the year that SSI took another major step to ensure that it will remain a viable privately owned company for the indefinite future. This major development was James (Jim) Enright assuming the position of President/CEO in July 2007 with Richard Caletti, the long time President, being appointed as Chairman of the Board by the independent Board of Directors elected in 2006. These actions follow the formation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) with the goal for the company to be 100% employee owned by 2011. As of early 2007, the employees own 36% of the company through the ESOP plan.
The addition of Jim Enright as the leader of the SSI Team, a man who has spent his entire adult life in the EWP field, is a very positive move for the future of SSI. He joined SSI from Rosboro Lumber where he was General Sales Manager. Rosboro is the largest producer of Glue Laminated Beam products in the North America.
The Company’s Sales staff consists of Technical Sales Representatives and Project Managers who operate out of their home offices throughout California. This gives SSI thorough coverage in the biggest EWP market in the world. We have an authorized contractor’s distribution agreement with Precision Components Systems (PCS) for the much of the West outside of California. Colorado is handled by Lam-Wood Systems Inc. PCS is a company formed by long-time SSI employees to handle the engineering, sales and project management for the much of the Western United States area.
The manufacturing plant and corporate office are located in Windsor, California, 60 miles north of San Francisco. The manufacturing facility consists of approximately 300 MSF of manufacturing and office space on 35 acres. The property is leased by SSI as part of the 100 acres owned by the Caletti family. SSI has an SSW truss manufacturing facility in Loveland, Colorado as well.
COMPANY
HISTORY
The Company was incorporated in 1947 by Carlo W. Caletti as an outgrowth of a modular building company, Standard Engineering. Standard Engineering used in their modular buildings a laminated arch as its major structural component. The potential for the growth of laminated arches and the straight laminated beam components, which were called glulams, appeared to be greater than that of the modular buildings and Standard Structures, Inc. was formed to manufacture glulams in 1947. Carlo Caletti was the first President, CEO, and major shareholder.
The Company has continued to expand as a manufacturer of glulams. After the death of Carlo Caletti in 1969, his son, Richard C. Caletti, assumed the role of President and CEO. SSI is the oldest glulam manufacturer in the United States operating under its founding name and ownership entity. James (Jim) Enright assumed the position of President/CEO in July 2007.
During the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s, SSI introduced other engineered wood products. The most notable of these were SSI Joist, SSI Purlin, Purlam and Mini Lam and the SST Truss Purlin and Joist. The development of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and Machine Stress-Rated lumber (MSR), along with Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), have made the I-Joist one of the most rapidly growing products in the construction industry.
Since 2001 SSI has added two new product lines to meet the industry needs. The High Strength Composite (HSC) beam with a 3200 Fiber stress can be used successfully to lower the overall cost of building construction. The SSW truss was introduced in late 2002 and provides the purchaser with a tubular web truss using MSR lumber for its flanges.
The need in the construction industry for specially designed heavy timber trusses, curved, complex shapes, and other specialty items such as pedestrian bridges, have been products SSI classifies as Custom Complex. SSI is one of the few companies in the United States that can manufacture all of these complex shapes, sizes and configurations.
